How to measure remote-work productivity without micromanaging
Remote work broke the old proxy for productivity: being visibly at a desk. Many managers replaced it with a worse one — hours logged in. Presence is not output, and chasing it just teaches people to jiggle the mouse.
Better signals than "time online"
- Active vs. idle time. Real engaged time, separated from time the machine sat untouched.
- Productive application mix. Time in tools that map to the person's actual job, versus distraction.
- Focus / context-switching. How often the foreground task changes. Constant switching often signals bad tooling or too many interruptions — not laziness.
- Consistency. A steady rhythm usually beats heroic bursts followed by crashes.
Read them in context, together
No single number is a verdict. Someone with lower "active hours" but high productive-app ratio and low switching may be your most effective worker. Someone online twelve hours with 30 context-switches an hour may be drowning, not slacking. Opus surfaces these signals side by side so you interpret them as a picture, not a scoreboard.
The healthiest way to use productivity data is to compare a person to their own trend and to peers in the same role — and then ask why a gap exists before assuming it's effort.
